Together We Can

7:57 am

Yesterday, I had an outburst on facebook, I shouldn't have,  but I was so mad and the problem with being angry is that you do not make much sense. I have learnt my lessons and I am sorry for my outburst.

I was trying to make a point but it did not turn out right. The thing is, everyday on social media platforms we see people, most of whom are getting attention for doing nothing much. Being beautiful or handsome is not our making, it's God's gift to us. The fact that we can afford to wear designers and put on nice make up is because God blessed us and He did that through people- and that includes those who actually made the fabrics, designed the clothes and sew them.

Calling ourselves "self made'' does not really mean we are self made. There must have been parents that tried their best to put us through school. Uncles that chipped in money or words of advice once in a while or just a random person that told us "ji si ike'' at one point or the other that made us put in our best.

Let us believe that there really was nobody at all, nobody ever gave us even pure water on credit after we came back from a job search, tired and feeling hopeless. Nobody ever heard us yawn so bad and gave us food or even #100 Naira and because of all these, we decided to make it and show them- people are still involved.

Someone must have inspired us at one point or the other, through words or actions. Point is, no man is an island, Bill Gates is very rich but do you think that if everyone in the world decided that they won't work for him that he'll still be so rich?

I was so angry, I made that post about me and that's wrong, it's not about me. It's about that kid on the streets that sells oranges we refuse to patronize because it's not displayed at Shoprite. It's about that young man we won't buy the sandals he made because they are not designers. It's about that young boy who just discovered how to generate electricity for his tiny village, but we won't support him or even share the picture or video of his invention because he doesn't have a tattoo and is not smoking weed with his pants down and singing of how women are just sex objects to him.

It's about that lady who is juggling between school and make up school and making jewelry to make ends meet that we won't follow or share her work or even like her pictures because she's not made it big enough. It's about that young man who is out there singing out his heart but who would probably not be known anytime soon because he does not have bitches, sex or drugs in his lyrics or there are no bikini clad ladies in his video. It's about everyone out there who is trying in his or her little way to make the world a better place that we most often usually ignore.

Everyone says the "world's not fair'', "nobody owes you nothing'', "don't expect anything from anybody'', but if we do not start owing ourselves we are heading for trouble. If our kids our going to have jobs tomorrow, we have to start creating them now. We need to start supporting indigenous entrepreneurs  no matter their field - fashion designers, hair stylists, furniture makers, artists, make up artists, small business owners, radio personalities, bloggers, book distributors, hawkers, upcoming musicians and actors etc.

Their works may not be perfect at the beginning, but with constant practice and encouragement they  will get there and our words of advice and constructive criticism can go a long way. Government policies may not always be favourable, but we gat to do what we gat to do.

Social media was meant to be a blessing not a curse. Build yourself, build others, show support and encouragement in any little way. That may be the only way we will get out of this economic wilderness anytime soon. Go out of your way to help others, and soon we will reap the benefits. Our kids won't have to go around looking for nonexistent jobs because we've created jobs for them before time.

The sky is big enough for every star to shine. Help someone shine today, tell yourself you must shine and together we can make it past this recession and create a future that we would be proud of and our kids will thank us for.
